EurExcel - The European Association of Innovating SMEs
EurExcel’s mission as a membership based Association is to help SMEs (small and medium sized enterprises) reach global markets and benefit from innovation and the capital available through EC projects. The primary area of EurExcel’s activities as a membership based Association are to aid and support SMEs to secure and then most effectively deliver tangible results from EC funded activities, both in Framework and Competitiveness and Innovation funded projects. This has resulted in them developing a number of concepts into robust proposals that have secured financial support from the Commission, the projects have then been well managed and have where complete delivered real commercial benefit to the SME participants. This has been facilitated by EurExcel’s project and IP management expertise, ensuring that projects deliver contractual obligations on time and that IP is most effectively protected to enable exploitation.

Phytorem S.A.
The company was founded in 2002 by Bernard Benayoun and Veronique Arfi. Bernard is a designer, creator and entrepreneur and, a specialist in the recovery of bamboo. Veronique Arfi is an agricultural engineer, specialising in sanitation and phytoremediation. The company is now growing rapidly and currently employs over 17 employees, this number is expected to grow rapidly; since the start of 2008 the company has been contracted to install 150 new applications and is also seeking to invest further in its own R&D capabilities. The company’s innovative and entrepreneurial approach has been recognised by various French government agencies, such as the trophy for innovation in agriculture (2000), Innovative business from ANVAR (French Ministry of Research) (2001) and validation by the French water Agency for the Bamboo Sanitation process (2004). The company is seeking to expand out of the domestic French market where they have established a very strong brand reputation for the quality and efficiency of their processes. They are looking through this project to broaden their opportunities throughout EU27 targeting large and small food manufacturers, Through other measures, such as the Ea-Image Export agency they are investigating export opportunities in the developing world in countries from the Far East, South America, North Africa and the Middle East, the validation of the large scale intensified process by this project will further enhance these export opportunities.

Cobelgal Lda
Cobelgal Lda is a Portuguese company specialising in commercialisation and R&D activities in environmental care technologies. The firm was founded and is owned by Mr. Joris De Vos. They have a recognised expertise in wetland remediation systems and have been responsible for the installation of a number of systems to treat municipal effluent waste across Portugal. Through this expertise they identified that bamboo can offer a number of advantages when compared with traditional reed beds in effluent remediation. As a consequence they have worked increasingly closely and cooperatively with Phytorem on developing the use of bamboo for remediation. They have been responsible as the main contractor for two constructed wetlands for the treatment of wastewaters utilising bamboo (non-intensive); 12ha for domestic wastewaters in the municipality of Demure (Portugal) and, 50ha for treatment of effluent from wine production in Setubal (Portugal). They have further developed a specialist vertical bamboo pre-treatment filters that will be a core component of this market replication pilot project. These filters have been proven and validated on smaller scale applications and have been used on a number of occasions, providing a high level of confidence in the proposed application in this study.

Eau et Industrie (EEI) was founded in 1999 and is still owned by the executives in Saint Nicolas des Eaux (Brittany). The company has subsequently opened a further two offices in France and through its significant international client base now undertakes projects throughout the world. The company’s philosophy is based around long term client relationships. The company’s expertise is based around a full life cycle approach to water management; ensuring that the water usage is optimised and that discharges, once minimised are treated in a sound eco-friendly manner.
The company’s activities are divided into the following areas:
- Water treatment. Defining treatments. Pilot testing treatments and subsequent full scale capital implementation, including staff training
- Water resources. Helping to locate, qualify the resource and treat water sources. Ensuring regulatory compliance, control of engineering and training of clients’ personnel.
- Analysis. Defining testing protocols, undertaking analysis including the interpretation of results. Modelling hydrodynamics..
- Regulatory support. Ensuring clients are able to understand and then comply with regulatory compliance regarding water treatment.
- Audits. Supporting clients to improve their water management.
The company has been involved in an ERDF supported action “OSEO” aimed at technology transfer and innovative technology based projects with real marketing prospects.
